  6. Introducing the Lan Guardian

  8. The UUNET Lan Guardian is the first in a family of network 
  9. security products from UUNET Technologies, Inc., of 
  10. Falls Church, VA. The Lan Guardian is a hardware security 
  11. solution designed for companies that wish to benefit from 
  12. the cost savings of using Commercial Internet Service 
  13. providers (such as UUNET's AlterNet IP service) but are 
  14. concerned about the security of their confidential data 
  15. once it leaves their facility.

  17. What does it do?
  18.  
  19. The Lan Guardian addresses those concerns by "splicing" 
  20. into the connection between the company's Ethernet and 
  21. external router and encrypting all data sent between company 
  22. networks, while also (optionally) allowing connections to 
  23. non-company facilities to continue without encryption. 
  24. Operation of the Lan Guardian is totally transparent to 
  25. network users and is simple for network administrators to 
  26. manage. Full configuration support is provided.

  28. The Lan Guardian selectively encrypts or decrypts each packet 
  29. based on the information in the packet header. Only the data 
  30. portion of the packet is encrypted, thereby allowing the packet 
  31. to be transmitted with normal routers. The Lan Guardian may 
  32. also be configured to block selected or all external traffic 
  33. as well as to use a different key for each network.

  35. By using fast processors and hardware encryption chips, the 
  36. Lan Guardian can encrypt/decrypt while only adding less than 
  37. a millisecond of delay. It is imperceptible to the network's 
  38. users, while providing peace of mind to the network's managers.

  40. Using the Lan Guardian eliminates the concern that all users 
  41. are running the appropriate application packages and using 
  42. the appropriate level of security when sending sensitive 
  43. company data outside the company facilities. The Lan Guardian 
  44. ensures that company proprietary data sent to remote offices 
  45. is never in the clear. This allows companies to exchange 
  46. sensitive financial data or business plans with their remote 
  47. offices via a Commercial Internet Service provider without fear 
  48. that the data will be compromised.

  50. How does it work?

  52. Functionally, the Lan Guardian is a 50 MHz Motorola 68040, 
  53. with Dual Intel 82596CA Ethernet Processors, a CEI 99C003 Super Crypt 
  54. High Speed Encryption Chip and 4 - 32 Megabytes of Main Memory.

  56. Keys are exchanged out of band via either a serial port or a 
  57. floppy disk. Support for Public Key based key distribution is 
  58. being added.

  62. Optional "firewall" and other functionality will be available 
  63. later this year. Additional models including T-1 speed serial 
  64. interfaces will be available soon.

  68. Existing AlterNet customers may purchase the Lan Guardian now 
  69. for US$6,000 or optionally lease for $500/month. The Lan Guardian 
  70. carries a one year hardware and software warranty.
